An estimate is a document about scope, not just price. Before comparing two numbers, confirm both cover the same work.

Labor should state crew size and expected days, not just a lump figure. Materials should name brands and grades — "mid-grade fixture allowance" is a placeholder, not a specification. Permits are either included or they are not; ask directly, because in most jurisdictions the licensed contractor pulls them. Allowances are budget placeholders for items you have not chosen yet, and they are the most common source of change orders.
